Advancing Research Integrity in Africa: A Collaborative Initiative by Digital Science and TCC Africa

‘Capacity  building for  African  research ethics and review boards’

In 2024 Digital Science and the Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa)  launched the Africa Research Integrity Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at strengthening research ethics, enhancing review boards, and promoting responsible research practices across the continent.

This initiative addresses key challenges such as preventing research misconduct, improving data governance, and upholding ethical publishing standards to foster trust in scholarly communication. By actively engaging national and institutional ethics review boards, researchers, policymakers, and funders, the project seeks to establish a sustainable framework for ethical research conduct in Africa.

As part of its mission, the project has launched a series of research capacity-building workshops across the continent. The inaugural Africa Research Integrity webinar, hosted by Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, brought together leading experts in research integrity and scholarly publishing. Their insights and hands-on experience provided attendees with practical strategies for upholding ethical standards in research. This was followed by workshops in Ghana and Uganda, further expanding the conversation on best practices in research ethics in scholarly publishing, and policy development.

Through workshops and stakeholder discussions, the Africa Research Integrity Project is equipping African research ethics reviewers with the tools and knowledge needed to align with global research standards, ensuring that African scholarship remains credible, transparent, and impactful.
